Crossing the Ice (Ice #1)
Release Date: 08/03/14
Narrated by: Emily Stokes
Length: 9 hrs and 5 mins

Summary from Goodreads:
Falling hard never felt so good.

Pair skaters Courtney and Mark have one shot left at their Olympic dream. They vow not to let anything get in their way, especially not Josh and Stephanie, the wealthy and talented brother and sister team.

The heart doesn’t always listen to reason, though...

The more time Courtney spends with sweet, shy Josh, the harder she falls for him. But they are on opposite sides of the competition, and their futures are headed in opposite directions. Will their friendship blossom into more or are their paths too different to cross?

I listened to Crossing the Ice as an audiobook. I kinda have a short attention span, especially when it comes to listening to things so it took me quite a bit of time to finish the book. I was also reading it at 2.5x the speed. This is actually the first audiobook I've listened to so I'm not sure if the small quirks are actually quirks at all.  Through the insanely fast pace of my listening and the short attention span, I was still able to find that this book is actually one that I really liked, all things considered.

This book was certainly a pleasant surprise. I was quite worried that I wouldn't like the book, that I'd find it too shallow or cheesy, but I actually really liked this book. The way that the story developed wasn't forced or too quick and there was a lot of chemistry between the two main characters, Courtney and Josh. The book didn't push the two characters together and didn't try to shove it in your face that the two are in love. Of course, there were problems and doubts between the Courtney and Josh, but this just made the book feel more realistic.

I loved the fact that even though Courtney and Josh are the couple in this book, they're also competitors in the world of figure skating. They were both so passionate about skating that you'll really find yourself rooting for them both to win, somehow. Courtney's reactions weren't too melodramatic and they were all understandable. Josh was also a great character since he was different from the usual cocky bad boys that seem to be extremely prevalent in YA and NA books. Instead, he was sweet, shy, and considerate. Not only that, he had dreams and feelings that makes him more relatable. I think he was a tad bit too perfect, but if you're in the mood for something sweet and light, it'll be fun to read his sweet lines and Courtney's vivid descriptions of how she felt with Josh.

I also thought that their story was extremely adorable as they knew each other since they were considerably young and already liked each other then. When the finally got together, I also found it really sweet when they shared music, when Josh played a song on the piano for Courtney, when they skated together. The relationship between them is a really great one and I was eager for them to become a couple.

All I wanted to change was how Stephanie, Josh's sister, was shown a bit like the usual 'evil rich girl'. It's not that she was entirely two-dimensional, but I think that the story would have been better if Stephanie had just a little bit more of a personality aside from that stereotype. Also, I believe that I would have liked this book more if I had read it instead if listening to it, audiobooks just aren't for me, I guess. Even so, I'm definitely reading more of Jennifer Comeaux's works.

I'd recommend this book to people who want a sweet, fluffy romance. It's also for those who want a light, easy story that you can still relate to in terms of following your dreams and the uncertainty of falling in love.

  2. I'm actually really curious about this one, even though I don't normally read anything close to this genre. I used to be a competitive figure skater and have had friends that I used to train with go to the Olympics --- it's actually really not that unusual for people to date the competition; we were all a pretty close-knit bunch ;)

At the same time I'm kinda afraid to because what if they got the skating part wrong? From the author bio it doesn't sound like that would be TOO much of a concern though.

    Great review; thanks for sharing!
