Santa's Sock of Surprises: Christmas Movies and Songs

Christmas is almost upon us so, of course, we have to do something special! We decided that on the five days leading up to Christmas, we would be posting a 'SURPRISE', something related to Christmas. It'll be going on for five days. For today, we'll be doing a blogpost about things that you'll want and need to get into the Christmas Spirit. So, if you're not feeling Christmas-y yet or if you're feeling super Christmas-y and just want to get more things about Christmas, this list is perfect for you.

We'll start off with movies!

1. It's a Wonderful Life

This movie is a classic. Audrey has to admit that she's never watched it but according to a couple of reviews that she's read (okay, one review) it's a timeless movie that gets better the more you watch it. It's simple and sweet and enlightening too.

2. Holiday Inn

This movie/musical is a sweet, heartwarming, and charming classic that will definitely help you get into the Christmas spirit. It's cute romantic and has a happy ending, of course. It's guaranteed to make you smile and inspire you to celebrate Christmas.

3. Christmas Carol

Okay, I think everyone's watched this or at least heard about it. This is actually one of Audrey's favorite Christmas movies since for her, it has this ageless feel to it that would make you wanna watch it every Christmas. No matter how old you are, this movie is great and I assure you that by the end of it, you'll want to spend Christmas generously with your entire family around you.

4. Elf

At first glance, this movie might have seemed like a horrible idea. You might think it would be corny, irritating, shallow, and obvious, but actually, it's none of the above. It's actually this funny, smart, and cute little movie that will warm the hearts of even those who hate Christmas. It's perfect for the holiday season and it'll definitely make you want to put a Santa costume on, bring out the hot cocoa, and play a lot of holiday music.

Speaking of music, the next category is actually songs!

To be completely honest, we don't really know that much Christmas songs which is why these songs are like classics. But hey, who doesn't want to sing-along?
1. Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer- Jewel (1999)

2. White Christmas Bing Crosby (1942)

3. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" - Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi (2003)

4. The 12 Days of Christmas" - Taking Back Sunday (2006)

5. Silent Night" - Jackie Evancho (2010)

GCQ Bucketlist: AUDREY

Julie Murphy, author of Side Effects May Vary has made her very own feature to celebrate the launch of her new book. She has asked some bloggers to make their own bucket list to help celebrate the launch. Since we have the read the book and loved it, we decided to help out. And bucketlists are fun, aren't they? :D

Her book was one of the best books we've read this year and we would like to give our thanks for allowing us to read and review her book by helping her out this time. Her book will be published on March 18, 2014 and we are free to post our bucket list any time between March 11, 2014 to March 17, 2014. We have decided that instead of posting just one bucket list for the whole celebration, we will post one bucket list each day starting from March 11, 2014 and ending on March 17, 2014, the allotted dates for posting the bucket list.
Today, we will start with Audrey's bucket list. Beryl couldn't do it today since she has her periodical tests to study for and is on the brink of tears trying to understand her math equations right now and Kimi can't do it since she's also very busy with school (or something).

AUDREY'S BUCKET LIST

1. Learn how to play at least three new songs on my guitar this summer. Since I've been rather busy for quite awhile, I haven't had any time to practice my guitar. I now have the whole summer off and have decided to use that time to finally practice my guitar skills (or the lack of them).

2. Be able to play at least one decent game of any sport. I really am not athletic so having one decent game means a lot to me. I can't really see this happening any time soon since people have long since given up on me but you'll all see! I WILL SUCCEED!

3. Go scuba diving. One of my biggest fears is drowning (or any type of suffocation) so I don't really like swimming in oceans. I'm okay with pools and actually love swimming but not in the ocean. The ocean really just creeps me out! I feel like I'm about to step on a weird squishy, living thing or get pulled by the waves of the ocean to the center of it and drown. The fact that one of our teachers showed the video of the surfer ( I forgot her name which is terrible since the video was supposed to be inspirational but I think it might be Bethany though) whose arm got bitten off by a shark in the ocean doesn't really help all that much.

4. Find out if you can really travel the world in 80 days. I want to visit places I've never been to and see if I can go to roughly all the places on Earth in 80 days. I might try to travel in 80 days or just visit places and have fun but either way, I will travel!

5. Go rock climbing. When I was younger, I vaguely remember seeing a rock climbing wall-mountain-thing but never actually got to climb it (or was it just a dream?). I'm not really scared of heights but prefer not looking over the edge of tall stuff. It's one of the reasons why I never tried rock climbing. I was too chicken to climb up the wall-mountain-thing.

6. Be able to make the school aware of what they are doing wrong. In our school, there are millions of things that I would love to complain about but I can't really do anything. When you're in school, you have to be nice and agree to what your school says because otherwise you're breaking the rules. This really sucks so one day, I want to be able to show them or other people what is so wrong about schools these days. I'm not saying that all schools are flawed but some definitely are.

I know that my bucket list wasn't very exciting but my brain just isn't functioning properly! Anyway, this is just part one of the GCQ Bucket List so the other bucket lists will definitely be better. We all prooomise! Hope you still enjoyed this one though!

What's in your bucket list? What did you think about mine? Leave a comment!

Title: Side Effects May Vary
Author: Julie Murphy
Publisher: HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray
Publishing Date: March 18, 2014
What if you’d been living your life as if you were dying—only to find out that you had your whole future ahead of you?

When sixteen-year-old Alice is diagnosed with leukemia, her prognosis is grim. To maximize the time she does have, she vows to spend her final months righting wrongs—however she sees fit. She convinces her friend Harvey, whom she knows has always had feelings for her, to help her with a crazy bucket list that’s as much about revenge (humiliating her ex-boyfriend and getting back at her arch nemesis) as it is about hope (doing something unexpectedly kind for a stranger and reliving some childhood memories). But just when Alice’s scores are settled, she goes into remission.

Now Alice is forced to face the consequences of all that she’s said and done, as well as her true feelings for Harvey. But has she done irreparable damage to the people around her, and to the one person who matters most?

Julie Murphy’s SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY is a fearless and moving tour de force about love, life, and facing your own mortality.

The Untold Story of How Christmas Songs Ruined My Childhood

I have never been a great fan of Santa Claus, even if during my childhood years I was being led to believe by several adults that this nice fat man with a beard apparently gives out gifts to children who behaved and were nice throughout the year. I didn't really buy this so I made trouble everywhere I went, without the thought of landing in Santa's naughty list crossing my mind.

I honestly didn't care about all this Santa crap, nor did I believe he was real. And I think I owe it to several Christmas songs for ruining the image of Santa and my childhood at that.

Come on, I wish I were a little more innocent that I had believed in Santa or in something that magical, even. But thanks to these Christmas songs I've listened to as a kid, I've gotten quite suspicious. Though I didn't really understand what they truly meant when I was a kid, I still felt a bit peeved while listening to them. It just gave me this feeling of distrust. It wasn't even just about Santa anymore, because plenty of these supposedly festive songs just gave me this sinking feeling inside.

Now that I'm older, I took the liberty to research the lyrics and make my own analysis.

And boy, I wish I hadn't.

1. Santa Baby

I first heard Madonna's version of this and I didn't quite understand the lyrics as a child but it surely disturbed me. When I got older, I realized that the song was about this woman flirting with Santa and asking him to sleep with her and give her cars, money, a yacht, and other fancy stuff. Not sure if said woman is a prostitute, but the thought of an old nice man who's usually likened to a grandfather figure sleeping with this younger woman is certainly not that nice of an image. Believe me.

I also don't know if I have a dirty mind or these lyrics really are euphemisms for something else a bit more sensual:

"Hurry down the chimney tonight" "Come and trim my Christmas tree"
