LIFE UPDATE

We've been gone for a while in the blogging world so we feel like we haven't shared to you details of what we've been up to. We have the exact same excuse as all the other times we've been gone, which is that school's been taking up all of our time. It was finals week last week, so we've all been really busy trying to catch up with all the deadlines and cramming for all the exams. We can't be sure of whether or not we'll be busy this week, so we'll try to update you with this blog post as much as we can and give you all the details now in case we don't have time to blog again.

So as we've said earlier, all we've done this week is basically study, study, study. We've also been really stressed out for the past two to three weeks, literally we've been breaking out and everything. A lot of things have been going on really, apart from the finals, we've had a lot of projects, papers and essays due too. Another thing is that we have an upcoming performance for our intramurals that we've been practicing for non-stop. We finally found the time to blog today since we pretty much finished everything already. Even though we're definitely more chill than we were a few weeks ago, we still feel quite horrible actually. We haven't really been getting enough sleep and all the aspects of our life from school to family to friends to extracurricular activities have been overloading, so we have been sleeping late and waking up early even on weekends. Even so, we're taking the time to blog right now since we've really missed it. We hope that we can be more consistent in the weeks to come.

By the way, we're nearing 200 followers!!! We're super happy and excited about it, and we would like to thank you all so much for sticking with us even though we haven't been doing anything lately. We'll try to blog more and maybe host a giveaway??? No promises! We would also like to apologize in advance because we might not be posting a lot of book reviews in the near future since we really haven't had the time to read anything at all. We'll try to think of new things to post that you guys will hopefully enjoy just as much. :)

Hey guys!! Kimi here! And I'm so scared to face the blogging world because I haven't been doing any blogging or reading in the past month! frown emoticon Ever since school started I've been bombarded with never ending acads and org work. You guys might now know, but I'm a president of my organization in college and it's taking up most of my time these days. We've been organizing a lot of activities and been doing outreach projects (since my org is a socio civic org) so I've been quite stressed lately. I really was on the verge of a breakdown for a while back there, but I was able to pick myself back up by watching The Duff (my ultimate feel good movie from now on) and listening to Hannah Montana music (yes it still works for me until now!). I'll probably find more time to read, and blog by October; hopefully things have settled down by then. And I'll be posting my hauls and travel stories soon! I just went to the Manila International Book Fair and I can't wait to share my experience with you guys! It's my 3rd year and it's still so wow to see so many books in one place! I hope I can do it soon. Thank you so much for sticking around with us, despite all our shortcomings.

We promise we'll be around more once we're less busy! And we'll do something for you guys just as a little thank you! <3

Giving Your Book Time to Breathe
by Lilly Avalon

Some books come easily, flowing from a writer's mind to their fingers onto the paper or computer. The inspiration continues to pour out and pretty soon the whole book is written in a matter of months, and in some cases, mere weeks.

Sometimes it doesn't work that way.

That was the case with Unexpected, my latest novel. The idea came to me last year in the spring, more than a year ago. I intended to make it the second book I published. Something just wasn't working, though, and I couldn't pinpoint what. So, I reluctantly set it aside to concentrate on a different book. It was hard to do since I had a decent portion of the story written.

After I wrote Resist, More Than Words, and Longing, I had to return to Unexpected. I felt it calling out to me, like something in my bones was telling me it was time. I opened the previous documents and read through the chapters and scenes again. It didn't take me long to figure outGI what was missing: I needed to tell it in dual POV! Last year, that thought never crossed my mind.

It made me realize how important it is to trust your instincts as a writer. All too often we get so focused on finishing our next story that we can miss the glaring holes--in the plot, in the characters, in the prose. The idea of setting a project aside can feel like failure. Couple that with having to start fresh with a new story, and it feels like going backwards.

Blog Tour: Don't Ever Change by M. Beth Bloom -- REVIEW + PLAYLIST + GIVEAWAY!!!

Don't Ever Change
by M. Beth Bloom
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: July 7th 2015
Rate: 3/5 stars

Synopsis:

Eva has always wanted to write a modern classic—one that actually appeals to her generation. The only problem is that she has realized she can't "write what she knows" because she hasn't yet begun to live. So before heading off to college, Eva is determined to get a life worth writing about.

Soon Eva's life encounters a few unexpected plot twists. She becomes a counselor at a nearby summer camp—a job she is completely unqualified for. She starts growing apart from her best friends before they've even left for school. And most surprising of all, she begins to fall for the last guy she would have ever imagined. But no matter the roadblocks, or writer's blocks, it is all up to Eva to figure out how she wants this chapter in her story to end.

Perfect for fans of E. Lockhart, David Levithan, and Rainbow Rowell,Don't Ever Change is a witty, snarky, and thought-provoking coming-of-age young adult novel about a teen who sets out to write better fiction and, ultimately, discovers the truth about herself.

Everyone knows I'm such a sucker for contemporary. Writer MC? Summer romance? Highschool to college coming of age story? Yes yes yes! As expected, Don't Ever Change was such a fun, and cute read for me. Aside from it being very enjoyable, I also found the narrative very honest and real, this being the main selling point of this book. I always favor character-driven books as opposed to those that have so many things going on but have zero character development. I'm glad to say that Don't Ever Change is able to succeed with the former.

It really appealed to me how Eva is made to be so unlike-able as a character, with her up-tightness and high sense of pride,  that I actually ended up liking her. I loved how ambitious and driven she is with her writing, that she's trying hard to find her voice by creating new experiences and trying new things - and doing a lot of wrong things along the way. But hey, that's all part of the self-discovery, right? I loved how willing she is to change and learn new things, and her renewed sense of self-awareness is admirable. She may appear to be snobby and socially inept at times, but the way she improves her interaction with her peers, namely her campers, reflect her character growth as the story progresses.

Summary from Goodreads:
When your life is a lie, how do you know what’s real?

Alexandra Gastone has a simple plan: graduate high school, get into Princeton, work for the CIA, and serve her great nation.

She was told the plan back when her name was Milena Rokva, back before the real Alexandra and her family were killed in a car crash.

Milena was trained to be a sleeper agent by Perun, a clandestine organization from her true homeland of Olissa. There, Milena learned everything she needed to infiltrate the life of CIA analyst Albert Gastone, Alexandra’s grandfather, and the ranks of America’s top intelligence agency.

For seven years, “Alexandra” has been on standby and life’s been good. Grandpa Albert loves her, and her strategically chosen boyfriend, Grant, is amazing.

But things are about to change. Perun no longer needs her at the CIA in five years’ time. They need her active now.

Between her cover as a high school girl—juggling a homecoming dance, history reports, and an increasingly suspicious boyfriend—and her mission in this high-stakes spy game, the boundaries of her two lives are beginning to blur.

Will she stay true to the country she barely remembers, or has her loyalty shattered along with her identity?

ABOUT THE BOOK

Chelsea thought she knew what being a rock star was like . . . until she became one. After losing a TV talent show, she slid back into small-town anonymity. But one phone call changed everything.

Now she’s the lead singer of the band Melbourne, performing in sold-out clubs every night and living on a bus with three gorgeous and talented guys. The bummer is that the band barely tolerates her. And when teen hearthrob Lucas Rivers take an interest in her, Chelsea is suddenly famous, bringing Melbourne to the next level—not that they’re happy about that. Her feelings for Beckett, Melbourne’s bassist, are making life even more complicated.

Chelsea only has the summer tour to make the band—and their fans—love her. If she doesn’t, she’ll be back in Michigan for senior year, dying a slow death. The paparazzi, the haters, the grueling schedule . . . Chelsea believed she could handle it. But what if she can’t?

MY REVIEW

I'm always supportive of the local publishing industry and would grab at any chance to review or participate in a book tour for a book written by a local author. There's just something completely refreshing about reading a book that hits so close to home - it's just a wonderful, wonderful feeling. The Boyfriend Backtrack surely made me feel that, and I sincerely enjoyed reading it. Towards the end, I came to know the characters of the story as not just people part of a book, but actual, real, live people who could be my friends or someone I know, maybe because of how much I found myself connecting to the book.

Though I wasn't a fan of all the copy-editing issues or some of the cliche scenes and lines, I am indeed a sucker for happy endings and best friend romances so I managed to overlook those tiny faults. I can't really say who Regina ends up with in the end (read the book to find out!) but I was shipping them so hard right from the moment the guy makes an appearance (and man, does he make an appearance). I loved how Regina grows up throughout the book and how she finally faces her fear of confrontation, by finally tying up all those loose ends from so long ago. I did admire her with her decision to find herself towards the end of the book, and that is something I would like for myself as well. The ending of the book is one of the cheesiest, but sweetest endings I've ever read, and honestly, an ending I would want to happen to myself (yes I love cheese too).

To wrap things up, The Boyfriend Backtrack is one of the nicest and sweetest books I've ever read, and is perfect to read with a cup of coffee on a rainy day, and the perfect playlist with throwback love songs from college. This one effortlessly put a smile on my face after reading it and I highly recommend it for people who love love and reading about love.

EXCERPT

My head is in a scurry and I could feel my heart thumping loudly. I cross my hands over my chest to hold myself together.
And then, with a quick glance, I see him strolling casually out of the arrival doors, pushing a trolley filled with worn-out bags and boxes. He is tan and fit, and his wild wavy hair is tamed by a red cap. He looks like a typical backpacker: cargo shorts, sneakers, and plain shirt. He looks quite rested and relaxed.
I suck in my breath, feet still cemented on the ground. The tall guy in front of me moves, giving me the full view. I watch him as he pushed the trolley forward. Then, he pauses, waiting for the woman walking behind him.I feel my face burning. There she is. Long, luscious hair hangs on her back. She’s wearing a white sundress. She steps right next to him and he takes her hand.
I watch them closely. He’s now looking at her and I know then that this isn’t just some girl. Chase likes this girl. I’ve seen him look at Laura before, and he’s looking at her the same way: a good mix of amusement and adoration.I feel the need to leave. What am I even doing here? Did I really think I could just show up and he would be happy to see me after years of not speaking to him? This is such a bad idea. I’m not even sure that he still considers me as his friend. I didn’t even know what he’s been doing until last week. What kind of a friend is that? They were heading my way. I stand there, horrified. Shit. I made my way out of the crowd. Shit, why are they walking so fast? Shit, shit, shit.Chase can’t see me. More importantly, I can’t see him now. Not like this. Not when I’m feeling like the biggest idiot in the world.
He pushes the trolley while her hands lovingly wrap around his arm. My stomach turns. I can feel a lump in my throat. I walk quickly behind a pillar. Shit. My heart is sinking. Shit, shit, shit.Good job, Regina. What the hell are you even thinking? I slowly peek back and saw them pass the crowd. When they turn their backs, she places her right hand on his shoulder.
I look away. I take a deep, long breath. It comes out staggering when I exhale. I run to the public toilets and lock myself in one of the cubicles. Thomas said, take deep and slow breaths. I allow myself to let out one sob. Then I’m not able to stop.

Blog Tour: The Young Elites by Marie Lu [EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!]

Hi guys! Here's our stop of The Young Elites Blog Tour, hosted by Pinoy Book Tours!

Excerpt:
Something snapped inside me. My lips curled into a snarl.
A rush of energy, a gathering of blinding light and darkest wind. Suddenly I could see everything – my father motionless before me, his snarling face a hairsbreadth away from my own, our surroundings illuminated by moonlight so brilliant that it washed the world of color, turning everything black and white. Water droplets hung in the air. A million glistening threads connected everything to everything else.
Something deep within me told me to pull on the threads. The world around us froze, and then, as if my mind had crept out of my body and into the ground, an illusion of towering black shapes surged up from the earth, their bodies crooked and jolting, their eyes bloody and fixed straight on my father, their fanged mouths so wide that they stretched all across their silhouetted faces, splitting their heads in two. My father’s eyes widened, then darted in bewilderment at the phantoms staggering toward him. He released me. I fell to the ground and crawled away from him as fast as I could. The black, ghostly shapes continued to lurch forward. I cowered in the midst of them, both helpless and powerful, looking on as they passed me by.I am Adelina Amouteru, the phantoms whispered to my father, speaking my most frightening thoughts in a chorus of voices, dripping with hatred. My hatred. I belong to no one. On this night, I swear to you that I will rise above everything you’ve ever taught me. I will become a force that this world has never known. I will come into such power that none will dare hurt me again.
They gathered closer to him. Wait, I wanted to cry out, even as a strange exhilaration flowed through me. Wait, stop. But the phantoms ignored me. My father screamed, swatting desperately at their bony, outstretched fingers, and then he turned around and ran. Blindly. He smashed into his horse and fell backward into the mud. The horse shrieked, the whites of its eyes rolling. It reared on its mighty legs, pawing for an instant at the air –
And then came down its hooves. Onto my father’s chest. My father’s screams cut off abruptly. His body convulsed. The phantoms vanished instantly, as if they were never there in the first place. The rain suddenly grew heavy again, lightning streaked across the sky, and thunder shook my bones.

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.
Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.
Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.
Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.
Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.
