23734628

Title: Carry On
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: October 6th 2015
Pages: Hardcover, 522 pages

Summary (via Goodreads):
Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here—it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story—but far, far more monsters.

October 2015 Book Releases That We're Looking Forward To

Hi guys!

We know we have been MIA for so so long, but we're trying to work on that right now. Since, we're not that busy this weekend, we're currently making queued posts that we'll be posting all through next week (technically this week, actually, because this will be posted tomorrow...). This is so that we can still give you guys good content when we're busy.

September is quickly ending, so we're here to give you a list of book releases to look forward to for the next month! Let's start with YA books (our fave genre), shall we?

Rainbow Rowell continues to break boundaries with Carry On, an epic fantasy following the triumphs and heartaches of Simon and Baz from her beloved bestseller Fangirl.

Simon Snow just wants to relax and savor his last year at the Watford School of Magicks, but no one will let him. His girlfriend broke up with him, his best friend is a pest, and his mentor keeps trying to hide him away in the mountains where maybe he’ll be safe. Simon can’t even enjoy the fact that his roommate and longtime nemesis is missing, because he can’t stop worrying about the evil git. Plus there are ghosts. And vampires. And actual evil things trying to shut Simon down. When you’re the most powerful magician the world has ever known, you never get to relax and savor anything.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story — but far, far more monsters.

Synopsis (via Goodreads):
Every year on her birthday, Ashley Perkins gets a card from her grandmother—a card that always contains a promise: lose enough weight, and I will buy your happiness.

Ashley doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with the way she looks, but no amount of arguing can persuade her grandmother that “fat” isn’t a dirty word—that Ashley is happy with her life, and her body, as it is.
But Ashley wasn’t counting on having her dreams served up on a silver platter at her latest birthday party. She falters when Grandmother offers the one thing she’s always wanted: tuition to attend Harvard University—in exchange for undergoing weight loss surgery.

As Ashley grapples with the choice that little white card has given her, she feels pressured by her friends, her family, even administrators at school. But what’s a girl to do when the reflection in her mirror seems to bother everyone but her?

Through her indecisions and doubts, Ashley’s story is a liberating one—a tale of one girl, who knows that weight is just a number, and that no one is completely perfect.

22082075

Lies We Tell Ourselves comes an emotional, empowering story of what happens when love isn't enough to conquer all.

When they separate for their first year at college—Toni to Harvard and Gretchen to NYU—they're sure they'll be fine. Where other long-distance relationships have fallen apart, their relationship will surely thrive.

The reality of being apart, however, is a lot different than they expected. As Toni, who identifies as genderqueer, falls in with a group of transgender upperclassmen and immediately finds a sense of belonging that has always been missing, Gretchen struggles to remember who she is outside their relationship.

While Toni worries that Gretchen, who is not trans, just won't understand what is going on, Gretchen begins to wonder where she fits in Toni's life. As distance and Toni's shifting gender identity begins to wear on their relationship, the couple must decide—have they grown apart for good, or is love enough to keep them together?

4. First and Then by Emma Mills
Expected Publication: October 13, 2015 by Henry Holt and Co.
23310751
Synopsis (via Goodreads):
Devon Tennyson wouldn't change a thing. She's happy watching Friday night games from the bleachers, silently crushing on best friend Cas, and blissfully ignoring the future after high school. But the universe has other plans. It delivers Devon's cousin Foster, an unrepentant social outlier with a surprising talent for football, and the obnoxiously superior and maddeningly attractive star running back, Ezra, right where she doesn't want them first into her P.E. class and then into every other aspect of her life.

Pride and Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights in this contemporary novel about falling in love with the unexpected boy, with a new brother, and with yourself.

Feature Follow Friday: Characters You'd Like to Have a Twitter

Increase Blog Followers
The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!

How does this work?

The goal is to increase blog followers and make friends. First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools — keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you! What sets this Hop apart from others, is our Feature. Each week we will showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Who is our Feature today? Find out below. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow our Features and you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee & Alison Can Read) as a courtesy. How do you follow someone? Well, if you have a preference, state it in your #FF post. A lot of blogs are transitioning to WordPress in which they do not have the luxury of GFC, so an RSS subscription is appreciated or if you choose an email subscription. If you don’t have GFC please state in your post how you would like to be followed. All features are chosen randomly to be the feature. They are not chosen by content or name.
Book character(s) you’d like to see with their own Twitter page
Levi from Fangirl
Not only is he super cute and adorable and hyper, he says the sweetest things as well! I'd love to see his cute and funny but sweet tweets all over my timeline!

Minho from Maze Runner

He's one of my favorite characters from the Maze Runner series! He is incredibly cool and snarky, and I'd to love to see his maze-related tweets.

Severus Snape from Harry Potter

I don't particularly like Snape; I think he's a selfish prick and a despicable a-hole. But still, I'd love to see him tweet about how bitter his life is. It'll probably be really funny and pathetic and meme-worthy!

Follow us through those links!

{Events} 35th Manila International Book Fair 2014

Hi guys! Kimi here! I haven't posted anything for a while now, and haven't really been active in the blogging community as well. I've been reaaaally busy with my thesis and college and org work, and my life has been topsy turvy this year! I really really do apologize and I promise that I'll try my best to catch up on my blogging and even reading (I am WAAAAYY behind my reading challenge). And I'd love it if you guys could help me decide which book to read next - please vote on the poll at the end of this post or at the sidebar! :D

Today let's talk about the 35th Manila International Book Fair! This is my 2nd time going to this event so I could consider myself a veteran (Ha,not really).

I was supposed to go to the book fair yesterday, but because of the strong rain, I couldn't get out of the house and was forced to binge watch my anime series instead. This weekend, I was supposed to go to a leadership camp but it got postponed because of the rain yesterday, so fortunately, it opened up my weekend for the book fair! I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to go at all.

I went with my friend, Eirene, who I also went with last year. We got to SMX at around 11:30am, and it was completely jampacked. Since it was our 2nd year, we already knew what to do and immediately roamed around the stalls. Our usual routine is that we'd split up, find books and take whatever we can find, then meet up again and start deciding which books to actually get.

Can you believe it - It took us 4 HOURS before we finally finished buying everything!

These are initially the books that I chose.... I had a really hard time deciding which ones to get!

So I finally present this year's book haul!

I bought a total of 8 books! I tried really hard to control myself and not spend all my savings in one go. Believe me, it's harder than you think.

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson P350.00  P280.00
Landline by Rainbow Rowell P599.00 P479.20

I actually read these two books already! I only have both as ebooks on my Kindle, so I decided to get a hardcopy for both. Amy & Roger's is the kind of book that has lots of roadtrip scraps and memorabilia in between chapters so I really needed a hard copy of it. Landline, on the other hand, I purchased just because I plan on collecting all of Rainbow Rowell's books!

Doll Bones by Holly Black P599 P479.20
Half Bad by Sally Green P520 P416.00

I LOVE HOLLY BLACK! She is seriously one of my favorite authors EVER when it comes to the paranomal genre and I would read anything written by her. This one is middle grade for ages 10-14, but who cares. Half Bad, on the other hand, is a book that I started reading when I was in a bookstore in JFK airport last summer waiting for my flight. I sat there reading it not realizing I was already there for almost an hour until the lady in the counter finally came up to me and politely said "Oh, don't forget to put that back in the shelf when you're done reading." That was probably the nice American way of telling me to piss off, and she probably thought I was a smartass cheeky Asian kid so I put it back in the shelf and left. In an afterthought, I actually realized that I probably should have bought it just to show her that I wasn't that rude, but I was extremely broke that time... so yeah. Anyway, I never really did get to finish that book so I got it today! Hooray!

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier Clay P680 P544
Wintertown by Stephen Emond P360 P288

YAY more books! I know from my sister that The Amazing Adventures is quite intense, so I just had to read it for myself! And Wintertown won me over with the pretty illustrations inside the book. Heehee, I'm such a sucker for beautiful covers and illustrations!

Doctor Who: Beautiful Chaos by Gary Russell P439 P351.20
Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls by David Sedaris P315 P252

Everyone knows I'm a big whovian so it's no surprise that I have something Doctor Who related on my haul this year! I had actually planned on buying a different DW book, but it was out of stock so I got this instead! Ten is my favorite Doctor as well, so it makes sense that I got this one. Oh and I got Let's Explore Diabetes for my sister.

Look at this pretty bookmark I got for free! :D I don't normally use bookmarks because I like finishing books in one sitting, or on times that I don't, I have zero problems with remembering the last page I'm at. But since this is super cute, I just have to use it!

So that was my MIBF 2014 experience! Did you go to the book fair as well? What books did you get? Are you going tomorrow (It's the last day!)? What books do you plan to get?

Please please please help me decide which book to read first!

NEXT BOOK TO READ?

Book in Review: Landline by Rainbow Rowell

18081809
Title: Landline
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Date: July 8th, 2014
Rating: 5/5 stars

WOW. I must say that Rainbow Rowell has done it again!

If written by any other author, this isn't the kind of book I would have picked up on my own (yes, even despite the covergasm) but since I completely adore Rainbow Rowell, I just HAD to read this.

What I appreciate a lot about Rowell's books is how diverse and different they all are. No two books are similar in its story, theme or even setting, and I wanted to point that out especially in the case of her newest one, Landline. Landline is NOT Young Adult like Eleanor and Park and Fangirl, but it is also not completely New Adult like Attachments. It's a mixture of both with a hint of paranormal in the story, and it's because of how these genres all mesh together into this wonderful book that I was able to appreciate more the careful prose Rainbow puts into every story she writes.

This book is a lot darker, sadder, more realistic and less happily ever after compared to her other books (though there is nothing sunshine and happy about Eleanor & Park). It's about Georgie McCool, a driven TV sitcom writer, who deals with the fact that her marriage is crumbling. She still loves her husband Neal very much, as well has her two children, but when she is forced to stay in Los Angeles for work, while Neal and the kids go to Omaha for the holidays, Georgie thinks that this time she has done it. Neal is visibly upset with her and goes to Omaha with the kids anyway, leaving Georgie alone during Christmas. When Georgie discovers a way to communicate with the Neal in the past, she grabs the opportunity to fix her marriage... but can she do it?

This book is first and foremost a love story, but it's not just that. It's a story about marriage, family, friendship, choices and happiness. I liked that the story does not focus just on Georgie falling in love with Neal, but also with how she falls in love with her career, her relationships with her best friend, her mother, her sister and her children, and finding the balance among your priorities in life. The book is well-paced and every single moment is important and necessary to the story. It was also a very realistic portrayal of married life and family, and I appreciated the honesty of it all. The characters are all so well-rounded, and we have to give it to Rainbow for her impeccable way of crafting amazing characters. Even the secondary characters are so distinct, the bit with the pizza girl and the puppies giving birth is one of the highlights of the book for me and these little tidbits make the book even better. The writing is also very crisp and fresh, nothing less expected from Rainbow's top notch writing and effortless narrative. Georgie and Neal's love story is of course the main focus of the book, and it wasn't difficult to ship them at all. Their story is told through bits of the present and the past intertwined together, and it was certainly a unique way to show their story.

Landline is the type of book you have to go into with open eyes. It's not easy to accept that things change and that life gets in the way, but that's the way it is. Sometimes you just have to hit the pause button and really think and try to remember why you chose to be the person you are now, and remind yourself why you wanted this. This is what Landline is about: making choices - whether it's about marriage, career, kids or whatever it may be. Georgie comes to terms with that realization towards the end, with a little help from the past. Which brings me to my favorite part of this book: the ending. I don't want to reveal much, but it was the story going full circle and it was just perfect!

Love is a choice, and I liked how that shone through in the novel. I loved how it was never perfect between Georgie and Neal, and even the ending does not assure us of the lasting relationship between them - but it was realistic, and I just know that they would continue fighting for each other and choosing to be with each other, even if it's hard. And that's what marriage - that's what love - is about.

So whether married or not, you just HAVE to read this book.

Feature Follow Friday

"Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow!"

"The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read."

Guess what?
We are chosen to be this week's featured blogger!!! That means we three are featured bloggers, and we'll be answering some questions. How cool is that, right? We still can't believe we are featured, but we are a million times grateful!

We were actually supposed to be the featured bloggers last week but we forgot to reply to the email sent by Alison about us being the featured bloggers. This caused some confusion. We decided to remedy this misunderstanding by doing the featured blogger post this week. So here's this week's question:

Have you ever convinced someone to read a book, a series, or a whole genre? What book(s) and who was it? Did they like it?

Well, I didn't really convince someone but someone did read a book because she saw me reading it. I once brought a book to school. It was the first book of the Mysterious Benedict Society series. I was in third grade and one of my friends thought that it was nice, I guess. I didn't really know that she was reading the book until her mom told me about it. I never found out whether she liked it or not. I hope she did. - Audrey

I don't think I ever convinced someone, or I just can't remember anything right now. Maybe it's because I just started to really read books this summer, and I don't get to interact with a lot of people. I hope I would get to convince someone to read a book that I like, so we can fangirl about it. Haha. -Beryl

We were not able to contact Kimi since she is in another country and has been quite busy. We can still answer for her though since she was the one to introduce us to Rainbow Rowell and David Levithan's books. She was also the reason why we started reading more YA and widening the genres that we would read.

Interview Questions:

When did you start blogging?
We started blogging last year around September or so, but back then we had more of a personal blog, not a book blog. Geeky Chiquitas became mainly a book blog around New Year. While we were celebrating, we kinda got the idea that becoming a book blog would be great.
What is your favorite part of book blogging?
My favorite part about book blogging is meeting new friends. The book community is just awesome. We've interacted with authors bloggers and so many other bookish people all because of our book blog. They're all great and amazing and super friendly. They'll make new book bloggers feel right at home.
What type of books do you mainly blog about?
Mostly we blog about YA, specifically contemporary. We actually read anything but it's just that we've had a lot of great reads in that genre lately. Of course, there are also a lot of books from other genres that we have also enjoyed as much as we enjoyed the books from contemporary YA. Basically, we blog about any book that we happen to want to blog about. It just so happens that those books mainly come from YA contemporary.
What is your favorite book(s)?
My favorite book.. Ah that's hard! There's too many to choose from but classic favorite would really have to be the Harry Potter series. I can't seem to find any book that can top that.
What has been the best thing that has happened to you because of book blogging?
The best thing about book blogging that has happened to me.... Is that I got to interact with a lot of great and awesome authors that I wouldn't have had the chance to talk to if it weren't for book blogging. We never really thought that we would get to interact with authors. It's amazing how, now, we get to interact with them and it's all because of book blogging.

So, that's our Feature Follow Friday! What did you think about it? What's yours? Leave a comment!

Feature Follow Friday: Author We've Met

Alison Can Read Feature & Follow
Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow! This is a blog hop that allows bloggers to gain new followers and find some awesome new blogs to follow themselves!

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host has a blog that they feature each week!

So, if you're a blogger, come join in on the fun!

Here's today's question -

who are the authors you've met?

Kimi

I've only met one author in my whole life (I know I'm that lame). But the author I did meet was Gayle Forman, one of my favorite authors in the world! I met her from a book signing event last February, and it was honestly one of the best experiences I've ever had. It was my first time to go to a signing and my first time to meet an author as well. She was awesome and fun and so hyper the whole time and I was so giddy when I finally met her!
Read about my Gayle a Forman adventure here: http://geekychiquitas.blogspot.com/2014/01/bookscapades-gayle-forman-book-signing.html

Audrey

I have never met an author before. I feel deprived. There are, like, a million authors that I want to meet and take pictures with but not a single one of them have graced me with their presence. Anyway, for this post, I will be telling you about one author that I wan to meet. I want to meet Rainbow Rowell. I think that she would be a great author to meet. I also love all her books. She's a great writer. I really hope I do meet her one day, though that probably won't happen.
