Holiday Blogger Highlight 2015: Sarah Clare @ Behind On Books

Hi everyone! Are you guys feeling the Christmas spirit? Honestly, for some reason, this year we haven't been feeling that merry or Christmas-y, maybe it's because we've been too caught up with other things that time has sped up and suddenly it's Christmas Eve already without us noticing! Well, to keep the Christmas spirit alive, we've decided to do this little feature in our blog, where we'll interview and highlight fellow bloggers and ask them what they're up to this holiday season.

For our second Holiday Blogger Highlight 2015, we've got Sarah Clare from Behind on Books!

Feature Follow Friday: Best Christmas Gift Received

Happy Holidays everyone! We're still wrapping up our official Christmas day post, but for now here is our Feature Follow Friday! :)

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!

How does this work?

The goal is to increase blog followers and make friends. First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools — keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you! What sets this Hop apart from others, is our Feature. Each week we will showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Who is our Feature today? Find out below. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow our Features and you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee & Alison Can Read) as a courtesy. How do you follow someone? Well, if you have a preference, state it in your #FF post. A lot of blogs are transitioning to WordPress in which they do not have the luxury of GFC, so an RSS subscription is appreciated or if you choose an email subscription. If you don’t have GFC please state in your post how you would like to be followed. All features are chosen randomly to be the feature. They are not chosen by content or name.

Question of the Week: What was the best Christmas (or other holiday) gift you ever received? - Suggested by Alison Can Read

KIMI:
The best gift I've ever received was a laptop! I received it late, like around January, because it was shipped all the way from the USA. Some other notable gifts I've received: a train set, art paint toy thing, and of course angpao (red envelopes with money inside)! :)

BERYL:

I think the best Christmas gift I've ever received is a box full of pajamas! That was about 2-3 years ago and during that time, I was really fond of anything that has to do with sleeping (lol), up until now. It might not be the most expensive, but I got something I really liked so it was just unforgettable.

AUDREY:

I believe that the best Christmas gift that I've ever received was my very first phone. It was not a very expensive phone. In fact, it was one of those quite cheap ones, but as a young girl, I thought of this as a step towards becoming more mature. Because of this, the phone became very important to me. To be honest, I didn't use it much at the time, and I got rid of it after a while, but I feel its significance whenever I look back at my past Christmas celebrations. I remember being ecstatic when I received it. That moment became one that I can never forget.

Holiday Blogger Highlight: Jessica @ A GREAT Read

Hi everyone! Are you guys feeling the Christmas spirit? Honestly, for some reason, this year we haven't been feeling that merry or Christmas-y, maybe it's because we've been too caught up with other things that time has sped up and suddenly it's Christmas Eve already without us noticing! Well, to keep the Christmas spirit alive, we've decided to do this little feature in our blog, where we'll interview and highlight fellow bloggers and ask them what they're up to this holiday season.

For our first Holiday Blogger Highlight 2015, we've got Jessica from A GREAT Read!

1. Do you have any holiday traditions?
Well with my family one gift we can all expect is socks! It's something my grandma used to do for all of us. So it's stuck with us even after she passed away.
Other is one I do for my older sister. I always double box and double wrap her gift because she hates opening presents.

2.
What's your favorite thing about the Christmas season?
I just love Christmas in general. I love surprising my family with gifts. I love looking at Christmas lights on all the houses. And Christmas cookies are good too! Though not for my waistline! Lol.

3.
Do you have any book recommendations that are great for the holiday season?
Hmm...that's a bit harder as I rarely read holiday themed reads at the right time! One anthology that I read some years ago was Holidays are Hell. It had some novellas by Kim Harrison, Marjorie M. Liu, Lynsay Sands, & Vicki Pettersson! Another anthology was Wolfsbane & Mistletoe. Those were a bit shorter stories as there were a lot of authors in that one!

4.
What is your favorite Christmas treat?
Favorite Christmas treat is definitely cookies! Some of them we only make at Christmas time. Like frosted sugar cookies, gooey butter cookies, peanut blossoms! Yum!

5.
Do you prefer the cold weather or the warm weather?
Definitely the cold! I'm a winter baby. Sorta. So I prefer colder weather. Though St. Louis has crazy weather. Right now it's raining & on Christmas we'll be in the 50s which isn't normal for us.

6. W
hat's your new year's resolution?
I think one of them will definitely be to figure out some self-publishing for my book. Right now I submitted it to a publisher & am still waiting for a response. After that I will figure out what to do!

7.
Share a picture of your go to outfit this season.

8. Have you decorated for Christmas? If so, please attach a picture. If you haven't, is there any design that you find attractive?

9.
Movie recommendations?

As some of my blog followers might know my favorite Christmas movies are A Christmas Story and then a more recent favorite Elf! And omg that movie is already over 10 years old! Where has the time gone!

10.
Share your social media links, etc. (Blog, Twitter, Instagram, etc)

Book character(s) you’d like to see with their own Twitter page
Levi from Fangirl
Not only is he super cute and adorable and hyper, he says the sweetest things as well! I'd love to see his cute and funny but sweet tweets all over my timeline!

Minho from Maze Runner

He's one of my favorite characters from the Maze Runner series! He is incredibly cool and snarky, and I'd to love to see his maze-related tweets.

Severus Snape from Harry Potter

I don't particularly like Snape; I think he's a selfish prick and a despicable a-hole. But still, I'd love to see him tweet about how bitter his life is. It'll probably be really funny and pathetic and meme-worthy!

Waiting on Wednesdays: Talon by Julie Kagawa

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted here, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

17331828
Title: Talon
Author: Julie Kagawa
Publishing Date: October 28th, 2014

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

WHY WE'RE WAITING?

Honest reason: We would read ANYTHING written by Julie Kagawa. And dragons? Definitely something new.

What are you waiting for? :) Tell us in the comments below and we'll check out your WoW post!

Interviewing Laura: Week 4 (Loki Rocks!)

A new Sunday, a new featured blogger!  It's already Week 4 of our little feature, and we are loving how this is turning out. Why don't we get to know this week's featured blogger? MEET:

She's a teacher, a wife and a mom of two. Loves reading, reviewing and recommending books. Blogger and contributor to SheReads.org. I actually think she's an awesome mom! =) Comment down below what you think!

1. Share your favorite joke or chat-up line.
Be there or be square.

2. Most embarrassing moment?
I have many, most of which occur when I am tripping over my own feet.  I'd say the worst was when I ran into a fence on a small dirt-bike after bragging about what a good rider I was.

3. Zodiac sign?
Leo

4. Most daring thing you've ever done?
White water rafting
Zip lining

5. If you were about to be dropped in a pit of lava, what would you choose as your last words?

Marvin the Martian

7. When you were a kid, what was the thing that was understood by everyone but misinterpreted by you? (Example: ______ used to wonder why people said that there was 0% interest. She means why would anyone buy it if it wasn't even the slightest bit interesting?)
I miss a lot of things, it is in my nature.  When I was young, my mother used to ask me if I thought money grew on trees.  Well, I didn't think it actually grew there but I did think there was an unlimited supply coming from some magical place.

8. Who is your favorite blogger?
I like a lot of blogs but I would say Shouldbereading is a favorite and of course SheReads because I review for them.

9. Future plans?
Less work, more sleep and time with family.

10. Animal that you would own as a pet? (Birds, cats, dogs, fishes, bunnies, and guinea pigs not allowed)
Cats and dogs are my favorite but I have had all of the above in the past. I don't recommend the guinea pig, they poop too much.

11. Do you believe ants are nutritious?
Hmmm... Maybe if they were covered in dark chocolate.  Wouldn't that add some vitamins to them?

Iron Man and Captain America are in a tie for first right now in my fantasies.

There needs to be more than 24 hours in my day.  Oh... And I think mean people suck.

Cheerful

Nook for reading and Candy Crush. I actually have a ton of favorites!

My kids and dark chocolate.  I know that's two.  I don't follow directions well.

My bed with a book or watching X-files reruns.

23. You just murdered someone. How would you dispose of their body?(Examples: throw it in the ocean, bury it, dissolve it Breaking Bad style) We're just curious, promise. :)
Tie some cinder blocks to it and dump in deep water... I guess.

24. Attach a selfie!

25. Links on where to find you?
Twitter: @lagnella

If you enjoyed getting to know Laura, why not check out her blog? :)

This week's question:

Late April Fools. What was the best prank you’ve played or had played on you? Share!

A: This is a hard question! We've never actually done anything for April Fool's - and that makes us pretty lame. We've always been together every April Fool's, since that's in the summer (here in the Philippines) and all 3 of us usually spend it at our grandparents. We've always had plans to do April Fool's pranks on people in the family, but they never really push through. Maybe next year though! :)

Since we kind of cheated this week, we're sharing one of our favorite pranks instead!

If you guys followed our blog, let us know through the comments, and we'd gladly follow you back! :) We love meeting new bloggers!

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays: 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays is a new feature on this blog where we talk about any book that has something to do with the concept of time. The book may be about time travel, set in the past or future, or just has a bizarre timeline. If you are a Whovian, you know what we're talking about! :)

We chose 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass for our post this week. This has something to do with time and was good too so we decided to place it in our Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays feature.

11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass

Title: 11 Birthdays
Author: Wendy Mass

Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.

{New Feature} Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays: My Mother Was Never a Kid by Francine Pascal

Wibbly Wobbly Wednesdays is a new feature on this blog where we talk about any book that has something to do with the concept of time. The book may be about time travel, set in the past or future, or just has a bizarre timeline. If you are a Whovian, you know what we're talking about! :)

Title: My Mother Was Never a Kid
Author: Francine Pascal
Mass Market Paperback: 256 pages
  • Publisher: Simon Pulse; 1 edition
  • Publishing Date: May 1, 2003

I can't believe my mother was ever my age.
I think she was born a mother....
Now that she's a teenager, Victoria Martin expects freedom, good times, and maybe even some understanding from her mother. But no such luck! She's still getting the same old lectures, the same old groundings, and the same old punishments. It's obvious her mother was never thirteen years old.
Then one day, as she's on her way home to get the telling-off of her life, something very strange happens to Victoria. When she finally arrives in New York, the station looks completely different, as if she's slipped back through time. And then she meets Cici -- cool, outgoing Cici, the best friend a girl like Victoria could want. But Victoria can't help feeling like she's met her somewhere before....

824096My Mother Was Never a Kid is a book which I read a long long time ago back when I was just.. a kid (lol excuse the pun). Honestly, it took me a while to finally remember and retrieve the title of this book but I do remember reading it, maybe because it had Amanda Seyfried's face on the cover (haha really) or because it had a unique plot. Unfortunately, the only thing I remembered about this book is that the story is about a girl who goes in the past and becomes friends with the teenage version of her mom. I asked so many people if there could be a slight chance they knew the title of this but I was unsuccessful! It took a lot of in depth research and stalking for me to finally find the title (thank you Goodreads and Google!) thank God.

When I researched more about this book, I found out that the one I read was just a reprint of the "Hanging out With Cici" the original book published in 1991. I also didn't know that what I read was an old book! They then made a show based on the book, then reprinted it, changing the title to "My Mother Was Never a Kid" so it would fit the show. Cool, huh? Now I want a copy of this book so I could reread it!

I also found out that Francine Pascal is the author of The Sweet Valley High series! Have you guys read or heard of that?

I thought this book is the most apt for our first WWW feature, since aside from the fact it has hints of time travel, it's also literally a blast in the past for me, since I read this so long ago!

Have you read this book? What do you think of our new blog feature? :D

Soupy Sundays: Nice Guy Syndrome (1)

Soupy Sundays is a weekly feature at Geeky Chiquitas, where we write discussion posts about our thoughts, feelings and opinions about certain topics.

We decided to create a weekly feature! YAY! The idea came to mind when we realized how much feelings we had about things, and it was just impossible to keep them bottled inside.

So for the first topic of Soupy Sundays, we have decided to write about the Nice Guy Syndrome.

The Nice Guy Syndrome is a mental condition in which a heterosexual male feels personally victimized by women who don't want to date him, and also perpetuates the belief that women are either evil and/or stupid for choosing "jerks" for their boyfriends. Said "nice guy" feels as if you are obligated to date him just because he is a good listener or opens the door for you, or is basically the perfect 'gentleman' (whatever that even is).

SCENARIO:

Nice Guy: I like you.
Girl: I don't like you back.
Nice Guy: Why not? But I'm a nice guy!

He will say either one of these things and it's better to just completely avoid these kind of people.

1. BUT I WAS ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU

This is one of the most common things nice guys say to make you feel guilty for not choosing them or
even agreeing to date them. Guess what? There's a thing called friendship and just because we are friends and you like me does NOT obligate me to like you back. Friendship does not equal to relationship and you must be delusional to even think that. In fact when "nice guys" start to like you sometimes friendships get destroyed because they accuse you of friendzoning them when in the first place you actually did start out as friends and now he feels as if you owe him a chance at a relationship. Sure, he might have given you advice, helped you with homework, listened to your problems or let you borrow his pencil, but you owe him nothing. The moment nice guy accuses you of leading him on or citing these instances to make you feel bad for rejecting him, GUESS WHAT NICE GUY IS NOT ACTUALLY NICE.

2. YOU ARE A CRUEL BITCH

Have you ever been called cruel or heartless? Nice guy uses this as an excuse for their rejection. They say that there's nothing wrong with him - it's you who's messed up, stupid, or have problems or issues for not liking him back. Nice Guy puts the blame on you, for something you have nothing to do with at all. He thinks that he's perfectly perfect, that if you're not interested in him, you're stupid and have no standards. You are cruel or heartless for not being interested in him. If he asks you out, it's basically impossible for him to accept a 'no' or take a hint that you're not at all interested. Instead, he concludes that you are either, playing hard to get, or are just a cruel, heartless bitch.

3. WHY DO YOU LIKE ASSHOLES AND JERKS

Nice Guy starts to wonder why you're with the guy that you're dating. He can't think of anything that the guy has that nice guy doesn't. They therefore conclude that the guy you are dating is an asshole and that you like to be treated like shit. Nice Guy then thinks that everything would be so much better if you would just date him. First of all, Nice Guy shouldn't conclude that the guy the you are dating is an asshole just because you chose him. He doesn't know everything so he has no right to judge. Second, no one likes to be treated like shit. It's stupid that nice guy would even think that! And lastly, the only reason that Nice Guy thinks the guy you're dating is an asshole is because he thinks that the guy stole you from him. You are not his property. You NEVER showed interest in him in the first place, and you owe him absolutely NOTHING.

4. THEN I SHOULD BECOME AN ASSHOLE
GUESS WHAT? You already are!

If you have said any of these things after getting rejected by a girl, SHUT UP! If you are pushing your niceness as a valid reason why anyone is obligated to like you back, then I'm sorry but you will find yourself in the 'friendzone' or whatever you call it for the rest of your life. Please do not confuse niceness for greatness, smartness, attractiveness or even kindness! Niceness is not a redeeming quality and it will not get you a girlfriend. And if you're still whining about how nice guys always finish last and that women have such bad taste in men, then take the hint: You are not a nice guy, but are actually a misogynistic jerk.

And don't even think about writing us off as misandrists or radical feminists.

Go find a hobby, you.

Valentine's Feature: Lists & Stories - Top 5 Films to See onValentine's Day (1)

Hi guys! Valentine's Day is coming so soon! Because of that we will have a mini feature on the blog where we will make Valentine's lists and talk about our own Valentine's experiences (e.g. How we plan to spend it)! :) Ok so for our first feature, we won't be talking about books (gasp!) but FILMS! A lot of books have been made into films, but we won't be focusing on book-to-movie adaptations either. We will be discussing our favorite classic romance films which we think are perfect for this Valentine's! ;) don't worry, we'll find a way to squeeze in books in this feature in the next couple of days. Watch out!

Beryl and Audrey's Top 5 Movies for Valentine's

1. The Vow

This is a movie based on a true story of a newlywed couple. We placed this on our list because when we watched it, we were touched by the love of the guy for the girl.

"Life's all about moments, of impact and how they change our lives forever. But what if one day you could no longer remember any of them?"

"If we were meant to be together, we would be together."

2. Notting Hill

We loved this movie because, though the heroine is a famous movie star, she is still human and has human feelings. She gets mad, she feels pain, she falls in love. And come on, who hasn't heard of this iconic line?

"After all... I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her."
